While it is easy (and very important) to recognize that free speech is under fire at many college campuses, it is much harder to know what to do about it. Reading this excellent piece by Professor Charles Lipson of the University of Chicago is a great way to begin thinking about how faculty can stand up for free thought and open discussion on campus. As Professor Lipson says,
Unless universities address these issues, firmly and promptly, they will fail in their basic mission of promoting the exchange of ideas, real learning, and innovative research. That mission requires vigorous, unfettered debates and diverse viewpoints.
